Benefits of DBMS over file based systems:

1. No data redunancy - Data redundancy was always a drawback under the traditional file based system. Under the DBMS system, data redundancy is overcome by data normalization. Since there is no data duplication (redundancy), DBMS access time is improved.

2. Data Security - DBMS can be password protected and the data in DBMS system is more secure than the data stored in the traditional file based format. Each person has a different access, and only those authorized people can access the data. Hence, the data is more secure under DBMS system.

3.Privacy - Only authorized users can access the data in the DBMS system. Hence, there is limited access to the data and privacy of data can be maintained under DBMS which was difficult to achieve in the file based system.

4. Flexibility - SBMS systems are more flexible than the traditional file based system.

5. Timeliness - There is easy access to data under the DBMS system. Hence, the response time is faster.

6. Recovery - DBMS maintains backup of all data. Incase of any loss of data, the same can be recovered easily.

7. Data Consistency - Data Consistency is higher in DBMS than in file based system.

8. Data Intergrity - Due to data normalization, integrity of the data is maintain in the DBMS system.

Examples:

DBMS - Microsoft Access

File based system - ISO 9660 file system
