Homestead Partners

Working with external data, charts, and application parts

GETTING STARTED

Open the file NP_AC19_EOM8-1_FirstLastName_1.accdb, available for download from the SAM website.

Save the file as NP_AC19_EOM8-1_FirstLastName_2.accdb by changing the “1” to a “2”.

If you do not see the .accdb file extension in the Save As dialog box, do not type it. The program will add the file extension for you automatically.

To complete this SAM Project, you will also need to download and save the following data files from the SAM website onto your computer:

Support_AC19_EOM8-1_Advertisers.csv

Support_AC19_EOM8-1_Contractors.xml

Support_AC19_EOM8-1_Contractors.xsd

Support_AC19_EOM8-1_NewProperties.csv

Open the _GradingInfoTable table and ensure that your first and last name is displayed as the first record in the table. If the table does not contain your name, delete the file and download a new copy from the SAM website.

PROJECT STEPS

Homestead Partners is a company that connects independent home owners with long-term renters. You work in the Customer Service Department of Homestead Partners as a data analyst. You are developing an Access database application to help manage and analyze several types of customer service data, including property and property manager effectiveness. In this project, you will improve an existing database by importing and exporting data from an Access database. You will also create and modify charts and work with database application parts.

Open the ManagerEntry form in Design View, and use the Chart Wizard to add a chart to the right side of the Detail section. Base the chart on the Managers table. Use the Test1, Test2, and Test3 fields on the chart. Create a column chart. Use the Test1, Test2, and Test3 fields in the Data area, and do not sum them. Use the ManagerID field to link the form record to the chart. Use Scores for the chart title, and do not display a legend. Save and display the  ManagerEntry form in Form View as shown in Figure 1, and then close it.

Open the ManagerScores report in Design View, and use the Chart Wizard to add a chart just below the first text box in the Report Footer section. Base the chart on the Managers table. Use the Test1, Test2, and Test3 fields on the chart. Create a column chart.  Use the Test1, Test2, and Test3 fields in the Data area, and summarize each field by averaging it. Do not link the report and chart fields. Use Average Scores for the chart title, and do not display a legend. Save the ManagerScores report.

While still in Design View of the ManagerScores report, change the chart type of the chart in the Report Footer section from column to bar. Save the ManagerScores report, display it in Print Preview as shown in Figure 2, and then close it.

Use Application Parts to create a Comments table. The Comments table should not have a relationship to any other table in the database.

Use Application Parts to create a Contacts table. One record in the Contacts table may be linked to many records in the Comments table. Use the ID field in the Contacts table, do not sort the field, name the lookup column ContactID, and do not allow multiple values.

Import the Support_AC19_EOM8-1_Advertisers.csv file located in the default folder as a new table named Advertisers. The file is in a delimited format, and the comma character is used as the delimiter. The first row contains field names and the CompanyNo field should be set as the primary key field. Do not save the import steps.

Import the Support_AC19_EOM8-1_NewProperties.csv file located in the default folder and append the records into the existing Properties table. The data is in a delimited format, and the comma character is used as the delimiter. The first row does not contain field names.  Do not save the import steps.

Import the Support_AC19_EOM8-1_Contractors.xml file located in the default folder as a new Access table named Contractors. Import both the structure and the data. Do not save the import steps. (Hint: The Support_AC19_EOM8-1_Contractors.xsd file needs to be in the same folder as the Support_AC19_EOM8-1_Contractors.xml file for the import to be successful.)

Export the Properties table as an HTML document to the default folder. Do not include formatting and layout. Save the export steps with the name Export-Properties to HTML and do not include a Description.

Export the ManagerBonuses report as an HTML document to the default folder. Do not open the file after the export is complete, do not use a template, and use default encoding. Save the export steps with the name Export-ManagerBonuses to HTML and do not include a Description.

Export the Managers table as an XML file to the default folder. Include the XML (data) and XSD (schema) files. Save the export steps with the name Export-Managers to XML and do not include a Description.

Save and close any open objects in your database. Compact and repair your database, close it, and then exit Access. Follow the directions on the SAM website to submit your completed project.
