RELS 2001: Introduction to World Religions
Religion Research Project
Essentially, this project requires you to take “virtual tour” of a particular group or site, describe it, and apply some of the knowledge of intro to world religion course.
In general, I am asking you to pick a specific religious group, carry out some brief research, and write up a short analysis. Some basic parameters for this project are:
- Pick a specific religious group/community/space/etc. Your analysis should focus on a single group/organization/church/temple/etc, rather than an entire religious tradition.
- In other words, do not choose “Christianity” as your religious group, but rather be more specific. For example, you can choose a local community like North Point Community Church in Alpharetta, GA and find a particular aspect of the church on which to write (ex. you could view and analyze a streaming church service at their “North Point Online” website).
- Or, you could choose a “non-local” religious group or site. For instance, you could choose to write about neo-Pagan rituals at Stonehenge in England, or you could discuss the architecture of a particular religious structure like the Al-Asqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. Ultimately, the choices are nearly endless.
- This should be a religious group outside you own religious background. If you do not have a religious background, then try to pick a religious group not primarily associated with your particular cultural demographic.
- Since this project is entirely digital, it is crucial that you provide links and citations to all the sources you use. I encourage you to use videos, webpages, and other online resources as the basis for your project.
Suggested Sites/Groups in Atlanta
- The Temple (Judaism)
- Al-Farrog Masjid (Islam)
- Swaminarayan Mandir (Hinduism)
- Our Lady of Lourdes (Catholicism / Christian)
- Buckhead Church (Protestant / Christian)
- Depung Loseling Monastery (Tibetan Buddhist)
- Atlanta Soto Zen Center (Zen Buddhist)
- Ebenezer Baptist Church
- Wheat Street Baptist Church
- Atlanta Chinese Christian Church (at Christ Church Presbyterian Church)
- NOTE: Remember, you don’t have to pick a site or group in metro Atlanta since this is an online course.
Writing your analysis of the site/group
Your analysis should be a paper that includes the following elements:
- Range from 275-400 words
- The paper should go beyond a description of the site/group (what they believe, what they practice, their history, etc.) It should link these elements to some aspects, themes, or concepts covered in class assignments, lectures, readings, and learning modules
Evaluation
Link to Website/Media (1 points): Provide the website or links to online media that you used to research the religious group.
Introduction and Summary (2 points): You should have 2-3 paragraph introduction to the paper. The first section should discuss the religious background and any interesting details of the group. The second section should describe the elements of the group or community.
Integration of Course Themes/Concepts (2 points): 2+ Paragraphs. Use concepts discussed in the course to explain what you observed about the group. How does what you observed support/contradict what you’ve learned in class? Be sure to clearly state the concepts/themes/theorists to which you are referring, and then describe its significance in relation to your visit.
