Guidelines for Assessment 1

Assessment 1 is a structured 1500-word report focused on a consumer article claim where students demonstrate skills in critiquing a consumer claim and sourcing scientific journal. For this report you will need to critique a consumer article claim of your choosing (Newspaper article, blog post, Instagram ad, etc.), as done in the tutorials in week 2, and source 2-3 scientific journal articles that support or disprove the claim and explain the research done in these studies thinking critically about the methods used and whether the study answered the aims/hypotheses of the study. The skills developed through this assessment, such as sourcing scientific material and critically analysing articles, will be vital during the duration of your university degree and throughout your career.

Criteria for assessment

This assessment requires you to use the skills learnt in tutorials in week 2 (critiquing a consumer article), week 3 (Sourcing scientific literature) and week 4 (critiquing a scientific journal article) and further reading to write a report on a consumer article claim of your choosing. This assessment is NOT a test of understanding scientific studies but rather the ability to source journal articles in relation to a specific topic and to start to think critically about the results presented.

Be careful to write your report in your own words; your assessment must be submitted through Turnitin, which will check for similarity with published works. You are able to submit your assignment through Turnitin more than once but please note - the first Turnitin report will be returned to you within around 10 minutes but subsequent reports may take 24 hours to be returned. For more information on how to use Turnitin, see the files on Moodle in the Assessment section. Your assessment will not be marked if you haven’t submitted it through Turnitin.

Your report should be structured as follows:

Title: give the report a concise but informative title (this title should give the reader insight into what the report is about) - can be creative

Introduction and consumer claim critique (500 words): This section should be solely focused on introducing the consumer claim. This includes discussing:

  • What is the source and age of the article?
  • How specific is the claim?
  • Is the article convincing on face value?
  • Does the author quote an ‘expert’ in the field and if so, who are they?
  • What ‘research’ and/or ‘scientific studies’ to support the argument have they mentioned.
  • How ‘scientific’ is the evidence?
  • Is the counterargument being made?
  • Are there any words of caution included in the claim?

Link to scientific journal articles (500-750 words): This next section is to link the consumer article to 2-3 scientific journal articles that are related to the claim made and can be used to the student’s discretion. This means you can choose 2 papers that support the claim and one that goes against what is said in the consumer article, choose all three that support or refute. What should be done in this section:

  • Description of the research done in each paper (does not have to be detailed, we do not expect you to understand all the scientific jargon)
  • What were the aims/hypotheses of the study
  • How the paper relates to the consumer claim
  • Critical thinking in regard to whether the research answered the consumer claim

Conclusion (250-500 words): The final section of the report should be your conclusion. This should summarize the consumer article claim, link it to the research that was presented in the scientific articles and final you should have concluding statements in regard to whether you believe the original claim is valid or not. You can also choose to make a statement on what further work might need to be done to answer the claim.

References: The Harvard refereeing system is used for this report- also known as the author-date system. Failure to document adequately and fully is to ignore scholarly rules and may result in loss of marks. References are not included in the word limit.

Formatting: Reports are to be Times New Roman font 12, double spaced (single column) with standard margins.

This is a consumer article that I think it should be used: https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/wellness-and-prevention/obesity-sugar-and-heart-health

Please focus on only one claim from the article
