Pedagogical Goal: Integrative Approach

Narrative stories are the cognitive ability to give an account of events, experiences and details. It also is often categorised as a ‘story telling process’. The narrative in this assessment will use the word as an adjective to help you narrate your experiences regarding property rights and land tenure in your communities.

Introduction: The Pacific islands has a varied and often dual system of allocating property rights. Every community although regulated by federal law may have its own traditional or cultural protocols that often guides or hinders land use allocation, use and disposition decisions. Secure, respected and defined property rights are a precondition to economic growth, social prosperity and environmental conservation. As students from different backgrounds there are stories from within communities and villages that share good governance practices and otherwise shares poor governance and abuse of power system. Your role is to document and narrate these stories for the purpose of the assessment. Please feel free to ask your elders for history and background to ensure authenticity of the work written. You may also complete this assessment with the help of your traditional or cultural members back home. Please be sure to acknowledge all who helped you.

The Task/ the Question: As advocates of humanitarian surveying and good governance you are required to share your story of how your community or village allocates property rights, the rules and protocols that are present in the community. And mention on the relationship your families have to the land they belong to. The narrative is not limited to land allocation and may share stories of social and spiritual belonging to land and life in the past and how it has been changing today. You are encouraged to share problems that you have present in your communities that require good governance practices. The story a list of questions has been prepared to help you start. Please be to reflect and write about your cultural and traditional community and way of life.

Questions:

1. Describe the community you belong to. Be as descriptive as possible to help your reader or viewers visualize. You may choose to insert pictures of your community in addition to the description.

2. in your community who has the supreme authority to make decisions regarding land use? (For instance, they maybe gender specific, example only males or only females; or chiefs at village level only and vice versa.)

3. What are some traditions present in your communities?

4. What is the culture in your community?

5. What are views regarding the protocols and culture (in regards to land) that exist among the members?

6. What is the way of life and property allocation described by elders in your community?

7. How is traditional lifestyle preserved in your community?

8. What is the view of traditional life described by younger members in your community?

You may add any other interesting or unique facts about your community to this story. To help you answer the above questions a model video has been provided. Objective:

1. Describe your home community and its traditions

2. Share the story of land allocation, property rights and history

3. Share the views of elder and younger generation in respect to the existing traditions to allocate property rights in your home communities.

Method of submission: Please complete this assessment in pairs of no more than two people. You have the option to submit this assessment using a written work or a video. For the narrative writing, please be sure to keep within the 10 page word limit. For videos, please be sure to keep within the 15 -20 minutes recording limit. You may use the similar concept as the story of the matriarchy women in China (YouTube video).

Before you start the assessment please be sure to adhere to the code of conduct. For any planned interviews, please get consent from elders and headman before filming. Show the landscape and make the video or report interesting.
