Maximum inductance” per mass”

You are given 1 m of copper wire at a gauge of 24 (d =0.511mm). Your challenge is to arrange this Wire to maximize the self-inductance. You may use any material for a magnetically permeable core to increase the inductance. Your goal is to maximize the figure of merit (FoM). The FoM is defined as

FoM = L/Mcore

Where L is the inductance and Mcore is the mass of the core. The lightest core you are allowed to use is PVC (plastic) with a density of 1.467kg/m3. Describe the design: shape, dimensions, magnetically permeable core, etc. The design must be physically feasible, this means that the turns must be separated by the diameter of the wire and multiple “lavers” of turns must also be separated by the diameter of the wire. Determine the inductance of your design and. as a check, compare this inductance to other commercially available inductors.

  • See example coils at coilcraft
  • Toroidal inductors at Digikey

Your submission must:

  • Describe the design including the shape, dimensions, and the magnetically permeable core.
  • Estimate the inductance (at low frequencies, e.g. < 1 kHz)
  • Calculate the figure of merit (FoM)
  • Provide reference(s) for your permeable material that includes the relative permeability mr and the density.
