There  are  no  right  or  wrong  answers  to  this  project.   Each  question  will  earn  either  5  points  for

a well thought-out answer or 2 points for a poorly thought-out answer. Creativity with real-world relevance is strongly encouraged.

1. Suppose you need to sort the data:

{(10,0),(40,3),(18,1),(25,6),(22,0),(30,3),(30,0),(40,1),(21,2),(39,2)}

I am not going to tell you what the values mean but they do mean something very specific.

  1. Sort the data however you like - random doesn’t count. It should be mathematically meaningful, but any of the following is fine - increasing, decreasing, first coordinate first, or second, or however you choose - with the awareness that the recipient of the sorted data (me!) might be forced to only pay attention to the first few entries in your sorted list. Explain why you chose the order you did. Keep your explanation to a decent paragraph, 150-200 words.
  2. Suppose each point (a,b) in the data corresponds to two numerical facts about an individual. For example (don’t use this!) (x,y) might indicate an individual who weighs x kilograms and owns y puppies. Pick something that alters how you sort the data compared to (a) and again explain why you chose the order you did. Keep your explanation to a decent paragraph, 150-200 words.
  1. Suppose someone else designs an algorithm which does a fantastic job of predicting if an individual will commit a crime within the next year. You are identified by this algorithm and recommended for 24/7 surveillance. How do you feel about this? Keep your answer to a decent paragraph, 150-200 words.
  2. Find some interesting fact on the internet related to ethics and algorithms. It could be an article about a particular real-world issue, it could be a related theoretical paper, or it could be a more sociological (rather than STEM) article. Briefly summarize it. Include a citation! Keep your answer to a decent paragraph, 150-200 words.
