MS Word

Assignment #2 – Tables & Graphics

Through this assignment you will apply many of the learnings from the past few weeks and demonstrate that you can you create and modify tables and graphics in Word starting with a blank document.

Instructions

Tables

Open a new document in Microsoft Word.

  1. Type your name and align this information on the right margin. Hit Enter to skip a line and change the paragraph alignment setting back to the left.
  2. Insert a two column, eight row table (2x8).
  3. In the first row of the table, type headings for each column:
    1. Topic/Activity
    2. Strength
  4. Format this row so that the heading font is bold, uppercase, and centered within each cell.
  5. In the remaining rows of Column A (Topic/Activity), list some of the items located in the Appendix list located at the end of this document of Course Outcomes/Goals for this course that interest you.
  6. Add additional rows to your table until you have 15 rows total not including your title/header row. Fill in these new rows with additional items from the Appendix like you did in Step 5, so that you have 15 Word topics/activities listed in total in Column A.
  7. Beside each topic/activity, consider your own personal comfort, confidence and ability with that specific task and type in High, Medium, or Low in the Strength column. (For example, if you have “Set tab stops” in Column A and feel very competent in using tab stops, you would put High beside that item in Column B.) Make sure all rows are filled in. 8) Insert a column to the right of your Strength column, and in the first row name it Relevance. Make sure that that new cell is formatted like the other two so the text looks the same.
  1. Similar to what you did in Step 7, consider how relevant, important and often you use each activity personally, and type in High, Medium, or Low in the corresponding rows of this new column.
  2. Use the select table button in the top, left corner of your table to select the entire table. Then sort your table by Strength and then Relevance using the Sort option in the Data group of the table Layout tab.
  3. Resize the columns so that Column A is the widest, and all text fits on one line per row. Center the text for Columns B and C only. (That way Column A aligns to the left and B and C are centered.)
  4. Insert a row above the column headings and merge the three cells in the new row to make one cell. Type in – Assignment: Tables & Graphics as this will be your table label.
  5. Apply shading only to the Label (Row 1) cell; and have no borders on the entire table.

Now you have a table that lists various topics covered in this course, sorted by your own ability and their relevance or importance to your work. Pay special attention to those areas that you marked high in Relevance but low in Strength as this will help you set goals for learning Word.  14) Set your cursor insertion point underneath the table, hit enter three times, then select the entire table and copy and paste it underneath the first table in the new cursor location.  15) For this second table (the one you just pasted), use the table Design tab and give it a new appearance by selecting a pre-set table style of your choice that includes colour (i.e. orange, blue or green, etc. and not grey or black and white. Make sure that the style you choose enhances the table and does not interfere with its readability.

Save your document as Assignment 2 Your Name (e.g. Assignment_2_ Robin Brown.docx).

Graphics

On your first table (the original one you created), place your insertion point in the first cell to the right side of the text Assignment: Tables & Graphics. Then:

  1. Using the Online Pictures command, search for an image of a computer and insert it.
  2. Using the image handles, resize the picture to be roughly one inch high and wide (1” x 1”). 18) Set the Text Wrap as Tight and move the image so that it appears to the right side of the label cell. (It should be underneath your name and still within the cell.)
  1. Apply Picture Style Rounded Diagonal Corner White. Then apply Picture Effects – Glow – 8 pt. Green Accent Colour 6.
  2. Modify the Assignment: Tables & Graphics text so that it is 20 pt. font, and centered horizontally within the cell.
  3. Set custom margins for the document to Top 0.5 and Bottom 0.5 inches, and ensure the entire document fits on one page. Then save your work
