Module 4: Overview & Outcomes

You have probably heard of Alexander the Great, the Han Dynasty. the Silk Road, and the Roman Empire. This week, we will be learning a bit more about some of these famous people and places, as they represent our topic: large-scale empires. As human civilization developed and more people began interacting across longer distances, networks grew.

This week we’ll learn about military/political structures, such as the Roman Empire, and economic and cooperative ones, such as the Silk Road. All of these represented the collective “growing together” of more parts of the world.

Course Outcomes (CO)

The course outcomes that will be addressed in this module are:

  • CO 1: Examine significant people, places, societies, and cultural interactions to determine their influence on world history.
  • CO 2: Assess the impact of various belief systems and political structures on the development of world cultures.
  • CO 4: Explain how social, political, economic, or cultural forces shape relations between individuals and groups around the world (Gen. Ed. Career Competency 5.1).
  • CO 5: Interpret the past in context, showing an understanding of diverse cultures and perspectives. (History Program Outcome 2).

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • MO 1: Articulate factual knowledge about the development of trade networks, Hellenistic Greece, Dynastic China, and Imperial Rome (CO1, CO4).
  • MO 2: Analyze the role of political and economic structures in connecting east and west Afro-Eurasia (CO2, CO5).
  • MO 3: Compare the Hellenistic Greek Empire, the Roman Empire, and the Han Dynasty (CO2).
  • MO 4: Defend the importance of a selected person, society, event, or idea in world history (CO1, CO4).
