A note to recommend a weekly brief article written by the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) on current volcanicity and associated geological/geophysical phenomena in Hawaii accessed at this address:  https://www.usgs.gov/observatories/hawaiian-volcano-observatory/volcano-watch.  These are wonderful.  And now that you are embarked on a semester with me focusing on these subjects, please keep current with the articles – yes, there will be terminology unfamiliar to you now (such as in current article) but in another month or so that will not be so.  But how cool is it (hot, actually) that the magma currently erupting seems to be leftovers from the last eruption (!!).  What does this mean for the longevity of this eruption… or what might come next… or how come there was no violent explosion when the magma rose to encounter the lake in the crater, which simply boiled away??  Has ‘Aila’au returned to replace Pele?

Other articles will also be posted here for reading that expand upon the subject(s) discussed in current lectures.  And it should be noted that these articles will be sources for questions to possibly come in midterm and final exams…
