Determine the maximum deflection of the simply supported beam

Mechanical Engineering

Determine the maximum deflection of the simply supported beam. E= 200 GPa and .Ok I understand this problem but the solutions ive seen has the moment equation being M(x)= 40 - 5x.

I don't have a problem with the -5x but my problem is how is the 40 positive when the moment at A is clearly a negative moment due to its clockwise direction.

In the back of the book the + direction is even defined as counter clockwise.

So I don't need the problem solved. Just am lost at setting up the moment equation.
