In a scientific experiment, the factor being tested is known as the variable. The variable is the factor of the scientific experiment that is changed between successive runs of the experiment. All other factors of the experiment are kept constant, so as to ensure that any changes in results are only due to the changes made to the variable. Failure to keep the other elements of the experiment constant could result in introducing a large amount of error into the results.
