Experimental psychology consists of utilizing the scientific method in order to test for causal relationships between variables. In experimental psychology there is an independent variable which is manipulated by the researcher, and a dependent variable which changes in response to the independent variable, showing if there is a causal relationship. Psychoanalysis is a theory and a therapeutic technique, and is not the same as experimental psychology. The focus in psychoanalysis is the unconscious. Most of psychoanalysis would be impossible to text using experimental methods.
