The U.S. economy is heavily based on the tertiary sector, or service industries. Examples of high-end services are doctors, lawyers, and teachers. Low-end services include the food industry and hotel services. The U.S. economy began transitioning from being dominated by manufacturing to services in the 1970s, and by 2000, more than half of the U.S GNP came from service industry jobs.
