Marine Life Report

Choose a species of MARINE creature that interests you.  Make sure the species you choose to write about lives in the OCEAN and not in a river, lake or another freshwater system.

You can choose to write your report on a species of whale, dolphin, sea turtles, shark, manta rays, whale sharks, a fish, an invertebrate, penguin, or any other type of animal that lives in the ocean, BUT make sure you pick ONE SPECIFIC SPECIES. In other words, you can write about the Spinner Dolphin, or about Green Turtles but NOT about “dolphins” or "turtles".

Do some research on that particular animal and write a report of at least one thousand (1,000) words describing its identifying or unique characteristics and current conservation status.

You must include information on

  1. Unique characteristics
  2. Where it lives
  3. What it eats
  4. Its current population size
  5. What is it threatened by
  6. Which particular conservation organizations are working to protect it and what do they do?
  7. Finally, you MUST answer the following question, "If you were in charge of managing the world population for your particular species, what policies would you implement to adequately protect them throughout their range?"

Keep in mind that for them to thrive, they need more than just physical protection. They also need strategies to protect their habitat, their food source, any other species that they have symbiotic relationships with, and any other species that help to keep the population of their predators or competitors down.

In the real world, any official description or policy recommendations should be accompanied by good references. Therefore, for this assignment, you must also include references to where you found your information. Remember that some sources of information are better than others (government agencies, universities and museums, versus personal accounts, blogs, and anecdotal information). Provide the links to, or the names of the books and authors to at least 3 different resources that you used.

As with all assignments, the entire paper must be written in your own words;  articulating your thoughts and ideas about what you learned from your research. Also, please do not include any quoted passages.  And of course, any amount of plagiarism will result in a score of zero.

To submit your report:

  • Make sure your report has a title and your full name at the top.
  • Save your report in one single MS Word file or a PDF file. Make sure your name and module assignment 5 are part of the file name (example = Josejohsonmodule5assignment).
