PhET Simulation Used: Balancing Act
Torque is calculated by the following formula
τ= F r sinθ
Open the PhET Simulation Balancing Act - Balance Lab option on the simulation
Choose the balance saw (the right option at the bottom of the page) with supports.
Click on “mass labels” and “rulers” options from the menu on the right.
Place a 5-kg brick at the 1.5-m mark on the left side of the board. Find the location on the right where a 15-kg brick will balance the board.
Calculate the Clockwise and Counterclockwise Torque
CW Torque : _______________________
CCW Torque: ______________________
Are they equal in magnitude? : ________
Place a 10-kg brick at the 1.75-m mark on the left and a 5-kg brick at the 0.5-m mark on the right. What do you need to place on the right to balance the beam?
Calculate the CW and CCW torque and see which side needs a boost.
CW Torque: _____________________
CCW Torque: ____________________
Which torque is less in magnitude? __________________
This is the side where you need to place load for additional torque.
Balance the Beam: Experiment with bricks and positions to balance the beam.
What mass did you use? ______________
At what location? ____________________
Compare the CW and CCW torque again.
Total CW Torque: ____________________
Total CCW Torque: ___________________
Are they equal in magnitude?___________
Go back to the simulation and choose Balancing Act - Game
Select Level 4.
Play the game until you get the max score on Level 4 - 12.
Include a screenshot of your results with your lab submission for lab credit.
You may calculate the CW and CCW torque in advance to determine whether something is balanced. You don’t have to guess!!
