Lab: Circular motion
Objective: To explore between different variables involves in uniform circular motion.
Introduction: Motion of an object in a circular path with constant speed is the uniform circular motion.
Centripetal force F=mv2R speed v=2πRT
; T = Time period or time of one complete rotation
Instruction:
1. Go to http://www.thephysicsaviary.com/Physics/singlepage.php?ID=26
2. Watch a you tube video by clicking on lower left corner “How to Video”
3. Click on “Lab direction” scroll down to YouTube video and click to play
The weight of the hanging mass is the force which keeps the mass rotating in a circle as in YouTube video. The weight of hanging mass is the centripetal force.
Instruction:
1. Set the radius R = 2.0 m
2. Time for 10 complete rotations.
3. Divide the time of 10 complete rotation by 10 to get time period.
5. Tabulate the value of force (Weight of hanging mass)
6. Click on new speed ( DO NOT CHANGE THE RADIUS) repeat from step 2- 5.
Rotating mass (m) = 1.5 kg

7. Open a excel or any other graphing application. If you know excel graphing move to step 12.
8. Copy and paste F column and 1/T2 column in excel spreadsheet.
9. Select both columns of data. Click on “insert” then choose scatter plot
Q#1. Re-write centripetal force equation in terms of time period (T) and radius (R). [ See introduction: Plug v on the centripetal force]
Q#2. By equating the value of slope, you obtained from graph, and the slope of Force (F) vs (1/T2) expression in Q#1. Calculate the value of radius. Show your work.
