ECON 1080 Statistical Analysis for the Social Sciences:
Reading and Understanding Real Research
The purpose of this project is to demonstrate proficiency in locating, understanding and presenting the elements of real statistical research. Each step of the project adds a layer to completed project report and is a roadmap to selecting and understanding research reports. The project has four steps:
Step 1: Locate scholarly research (5 points)
The first task is to locate a scholarly article using quantitative methodology (statistics). You should search the St. Kate’s library or a journal you subscribe to for an article of interest. A good indication that the article is scholarly would be if it was published in a journal which begins with “The Journal of…” The research must include an inferential study. A good indication that it is an inferential study would be if it contains confidence intervals, alpha values, or P-values. You want to choose an article with original research and not one just reporting and summarizing existing research. This project is much more meaningful if you choose research of interest to you. You may have a professional journal that you subscribe to or is an acknowledged peer reviewed journal in your field or you can choose one from the library. illustrations for finding a peer reviewed article are available at the following link:
Let your reader know what data sources did you search and why did you choose the selected article.
Step 2: Description and Hypotheses (10 points)
Step 2 of the project includes a description of what the article/research is about. It should include what is being investigated, purpose of the research project, why is it of interest to you, the research question(s), and the hypotheses. If any of these are missing, it should be stated and not assumed. Part 2 should be about 1 to 2 pages.
Step 3: Descriptive Statistics (10 points)
Step 3 of the project is to describe the sampling technique used for the research and the descriptive statistics (mean, median, standard deviation, etc.) included in the research. You want to look at the ways in which data has been described and presented in the article prior to inferential analysis. Examine the sampling technique making a note of any deficiency in the data collection process. You may want to offer your perspective on data collection and description. Would you have used different way to describe the data? Presentation of descriptive information (or statistics) is important to understand before we get to the inferences or results of a research project. This should be one or two pages.
Sep 4: Inferential Analysis (15 points)
Step 4 of the project is to describe the inferential statistics including the methods/analysis used, as well as the outcomes/results. We most likely will not have covered the exact methodology and analyses used in your article, but you should state what was used. As you state the alternative methodology used in the article, make sure to include some explanation of the test (method) and why was it used. You should report on the statistical analyses tools and reported results. You may want to talk about p values, hypothesis testing, and/or regression analyses (to give few examples). This report should also include the authors’ conclusions and also a reflective paragraph stating the value you gained learning how to read and understand research. Part 4 should be added to the other two parts and be about two additional pages double spaced. The entire finished project should be about six to eight pages
