My Lai Massacre Attachment

COLLAPSE

Read the article My Lai Massacre. It is about the killings of civilians, women, children, and elderly in the village of My Lai during the Vietnam War. Using concepts from Chapter 5, explain why American soldiers participated in the massacre. What is the main argument by the authors? If you were in the position of American soldier in My Lai, do you think that you would have involved in the massacre?

Expert Solution

My Lai Massacre

The main argument for why soldiers decided to participate in the massacre, was because of two reasons. Either because of honor, because they prefer to follow the orders of those that they felt knew what’s best for the country. Or they were forced into it and given no choice. I personally don’t think I would have massacred innocent villagers and children, because I would feel guilty knowing that it is most definitely not the right thing to do. On the other hand, I am totally aware that just like some of those soldiers, I would have to face the consequences of refusing which could lead to my death.
