Poblems with Media Reports on Social Science Research

COLLAPSE

We are bombarded with news saying “according to research …”  Take a look at major newspapers such as The New York Times or The Washington Post, and find an article that uses social science research.  Do you find any conflation between correlation and causality? That is a common issue in media reports on research. Do you find any other problems in presentations of research by the media?

Think about a topic of contemporary relevance in which you may be interested (for example, poverty, juvenile delinquency, teen pregnancy, or racial neighborhood segregation).  Using what you learned in Chapter 2, create a simple research question about the topic.  Match your research question to an appropriate research method.  Be sure to explain in great detail why your chosen research method is the most appropriate.

Poblems with Media Reports on Social Science Research

COLLAPSE

As a healthcare worker, I feel that the media outlets are a huge issue today in society. Since the start of 2020 the world has been severely effected by Covid 19. The media has a direct effect on how people will react and behave in society relating to Covid 19. We form relationships through our TVs with news anchors and the authors of articles in magazines and/or newspapers. We trust what they are reporting, but when there is inaccurate reporting it has a direct effect on how we behave in society. The news is a very powerful source, and can be beneficial but harmful as well. An example would be news outlets report the increase numbers of "Covid deaths" day to day, but what they do not report is what could have contributed to the patients death. Yes, a patient may test positive and show Covid symptoms but what underlying issues or pre-existing conditions did the patient have. There are cases where patients test positive and are Asymptomatic, when those patients pass away it contributes to the increase number of deaths. This can be perceived as inaccurate and poor reporting, which in turn can cause panic and concern and affect our communities in many ways.

 Research Question on Contemporary Issues

COLLAPSE

A topic of contemporary relevance in which I am interested in learning more about would be teen pregnancy. A simple research question I would use to learn more about this topic would be "How does the life quality differ between a child of teenage parents and a child of non teenage parents?" This would be an amazing research question because it could give a better insight to the audience on a child's life, being born on either side. The life qualities of both parts can be extremely different yet the same in a couple ways but the the answers to the research question portrays the most important thing to its audience, real information on this relevant topic. There could be multiple research methods used within this topic to give the audience the best way possible information on it. Research methods including surveys, questionnaires, and iinterviews are the ones I would chose for my topic. I chose surveys because within surveys, the answers are unbiased, meaning "no prejudice for or against something; impartial." This would be an anonymous survey, so all questions and responses would be collected fairly. I would use these numbers collected to reference back to while speaking upon my research question and how the percentages differ/compare to one another. Questionnaires would be a huge help with this research question as well. I could use questionnaires to ask people who are/ are not teenage parents about the life they have with raising their children. This would really help not only to compare the similarities of both lifestyles, but as well as the differences. This would be really good information to include in my research. Lastly, I would use interviews to interview the older children of teenage parents/ non teenage parents who can give me information of how their lifestyle has or is being affected due to the age their parents in which they had them at. This would be a huge help whereas I could include information not only on the parents points of views, but as well as the children's themselves, and how they grew up compared to others.
