One reason United states has such a high rate of obesity is due to an increasingly sedentary lifestyle. It has been decades since people worked predominantly in labor intensive jobs such as mines, factories, and fields. Today most people work in less active jobs where we are stuck in a single position for hours. It should also be noted that outside of work, people choose not to exercise in our free time to further burn calories. Obesity is a very prevalent problem in the US because people are unable and unwilling to exercise.

Another reason for America's high rate of obesity is our poor dietary decisions. In the last several years, fast food has become a norm in food consumption. Fast food has often been regarded as a very "American" thing to indulge in. Fast food is often the only available option for people because it is convenient and inexpensive. Even when fast food is not an absolute necessity, Americans have turned a blind eye to the healthier options available.
