  1. Do you believe that Google should change the use of contractors?  Explain.
  2. Why did Microsoft take the action it did?  Do you feel other companies can and should do the same?  Explain.
  3. Is doing something that is good for workers and costs money always bad for business (win-lose, zero-sum), or can it be good for business and workers (win-win)?
  4. What are the different types of contractors/gig workers?  Do the groups have similar or different preferences and leverage?  Does one group need more protection than the other group?  Explain.
  5. Do you feel it is better to leave decisions about the relationship with workers in the hands of employers, or do you see the need for a larger role of government?  Explain.
  6. Provide a one to two sentence summary with your biggest insight or take-away from the videos.

  1. No, I do not believe that Google should change its use of contractors. They seem to use contractors in a smart way and can benefit from the contractor’s work, and the situation can certainly seem beneficial for both parties.
     
  2. Microsoft ultimately took this action to abide by new laws passed in the state of Washington, however, I feel that it is a huge step in the right direction. I believe that other companies should completely adopt this new paternal leave policy as it offers tons of positives for the employees and the employer.
     
  3. I believe that doing something that is good for workers, but costs money is almost always a win-win for a company. I believe this because it can almost always boost morale, productivity, and happiness within the company, and these are often intangibles that you cannot necessarily put a price on.
     
  4. There are independent contractors, and then there are employees. I would say that independent contractors have more leverage than an employee. Also, I believe that employees require more protection than independent contractors as they are not as flexible as a contractor.
     
  5. I believe that there should certainly be a bit of overhead by the government to ensure that everyone is being treated fairly and are compensated but ultimately it is up to the employer. I believe that it is the government's duty to do this.
     
  6. The first video did a great job of explaining the key differences between employees and independent contractors. I thought one of the best points from the video are about tax time, I thought that employees may be entitled to tax deductions from equipment and hardware, but this is not the case. The second video is quick and informative in teaching you the difference between contractors and employees. I thought the best point from the third video was all the points that help you know if you have an employee or a contractor.
