So, the purpose of direct action is to create a situation so crisis-packed that it will inevitably open the door to negotiation

Two confessions: “I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate.” who he believes has been the largest obstacle to integration and black freedom. By preaching patience and valuing “order” over “justice,”. people who see injustice and do nothing are more sinful than those who commit the injustice. This is an extension of what he has been arguing throughout the entire letter

second confession: “I have been disappointed with the white church and its leadership.” He point out that “ The contemporary church is so often a weak, ineffectual voice with an uncertain sound. It is so often the arch supporter of the status quo“ and “if the church of today does not recapture the sacrificial spirit of the early church, it will lose its authentic ring, forfeit the loyalty of millions, and be dismissed as an irrelevant social club with no meaning for the twentieth century. “

The "Letter from a Birmingham Jail" was written in response to an open letter written by 8 Alabama clergymen of different denominations.  An open letter is a letter that is addressed to a specific person.  However, rather than send that letter directly to the person, it is sent to the public.

This open letter, linked below, was sent to local Alabama newspapers in response to Dr. King's demonstrations against segregation, for which he was sitting in a Birmingham jail cell at the time.  Read the open letter and briefly discuss 1) your thoughts on it, and 2) whether you think it is similar to anything you hear about the Black Lives Matter protests happening across the country right now.
