Ideas for ESSAY topics for Paper #2
Analyzing a poem can easily take up 3 — 5 pages of discussion. We want to integrate quotes from the verse (and we indicate lines rather than page #s. So it's "  [L. 32], for example, not p. 32) We want to explain the imagery, techniques, devices, symbols as well as the THEME. What is the job of the poem? To convey a particular emotion? To critique of a social practice, or value or ideology? To raise awareness of a social ill? To provide a historical, economic, sociological, psychological context of a poem and its era? Answer these questions and you will form your THESIS. Another strategy that students find useful is to COMPARE/ CONTRAST two poems (a strategy you learned in ENG 101). BUT to say "Poem X and Poem Y" has similarities and differences is NOT A THESIS! Writing, "Ben Jonson and Dana Gioia portray the acute loss of a son in emotionally powerful imagery despite the difference in centuries and geography" then yes, you have a THESIS and the reader will learn HOW that works out as you unpack each poem.
There are no separate instructions. You are expected to discuss the poem in terms of theme and poetic devices. Is there rhyme? Meter? What do the images mean? Who is the speaker? Is there any history that is relevant to understanding the poem? Same questions as the discussion threads. 3-5 pages. Same process as paper one. Please remind me what your first essay was about.
