ESOL 100 Multi Paragraph Final Assignment – 20%

In modules 4-6, we learn about different ways of evaluating what we read or listen to.

Module 4 – Assessing Source Material

Module 5 – Assessing Evidence

Module 6 – Assessing Language

For the final assignment, you need to demonstrate your understanding and ability to use various ways of evaluating texts or speeches. Therefore, you need to write a multi paragraph evaluation of one of two articles. One option is longer, and you would receive a 10% bonus if you choose that as your article. The other article is shorter, and you would not receive a bonus; however, you could still score a very good mark.

  1.  “Still Up in the Air,” by Alicia Elliott (2020). 3,048 words – 10% bonus added on to your grade

OR

  1. “Indigenous people have a plan for achieving true justice. When will Canada act?,” by Kekinusuqs, We'Dalx, Walkem, & Kwulasultun (2020).  757 words – No bonus added on.

In your writing, you will choose to examine and evaluate the source, evidence or the language of the article. It is important that you read the article very carefully, identify the main argument and the major supporting details, and think about the source, evidence and the language of the article. Keep in mind that each of these areas (i.e. source, evidence and language) have their own subsections and points, which you could include in your pre-writing notes. After you collect all the information and notes, you need to categorize them in three or four paragraphs. Each paragraph needs to have a clear main idea, and the information that you include in the paragraph should support that main idea and be relevant to it. You can also add an introduction and a conclusion paragraph to your writing.

You could use the following outline for your writing:

Introduction Paragraph:

  • The general topic or theme that is being discussed in the article
  • Author’s last name, year & title of the reading, and the author’s main argument
  • Your overall opinion on the author’s argument
  • Your thesis statement (What your essay is about), which should indicate how effective you believe the author’s argument is

Body Paragraphs (2-3):

Each paragraph refers to the reading and cites paragraph numbers when paraphrasing and quoting (quotations should be short)

  • Your analysis of one aspect of the reading (tools/strategies) the author uses – consider all the various tools we discussed this semester (source, evidence, language)
  • Examine what the author does (tools/strategies with an explanation of how they are used)
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the strategies (consider also suggesting what the author could have done to improve)

Concluding Paragraph:

  • Summary of your points
  • Suggestions about improving the article
  • Comments about the issue
