Dr. Francis Delmonico believes that even a regulated human organ trade would be exploitative because “it’s the poor person who sells” (Meckler, 2007). Answer the following questions:

  • Do you agree that allowing a poor person to sell an organ is an exploitative practice? Why or why not?
  • What documented examples from real-life organ donors can you provide to help you demonstrate how a regulated human organ trade would (or would not) be exploitative?
  • If you were writing your definition essay on the term exploitative, how would you define it?

You may revisit the Human Organ Donation and Sale Resource List from Topic 1 for resources. Be sure to cite all sources used to compose your answer. Format your in-text citations and reference list entry according to GCU Style.

Depending on who you talk to, selling an organ of a poor person could be considered exploitative because you are taking advantage of the fact that you know they are in need of money and would possibly do whatever they need to do to survive. Same with selling government information to an informant for money. If someone is in complete debt and just needed 90,000 to get out of debt and offered 150,000 for one of their organs, they may very well take that offer. Take the sudden death of Bill (BJ) from California born with an arteriovenous malformation causing cerebral hemorrhage. He was able to give life to 4 people through the donation of his heart, liver, kidneys, and pancreas (Health Resources & Services Administration, n.d.). BJ was only 14 years old. I believe this story is not exploitative because he did not choose to lose his life and his family chose to donate his organs. The word exploitative to me means taking advantage of a person or group for the purpose of making money off them unfairly for your own advantage.
