An active discussion is the key to an interesting and engaging online course. As others join in the discussion, read what has already been posted and add substantively to the conversation. Please think about each of the following questions and respond not only to the question but also to what others are saying.

The first question in this discussion is opinion and experience-based, so you can begin immediately.

1. If you were asked to inteview someone who has recently fallen into hard times (lost their job or a home to fire, etc.), what would you want to ask them? Would you ask different questions of someone who you perceived or knew to be living in poverty for an extended period of time?

For subsequent questions please meaningfully integrate your assigned module readings and videos. We will go through the questions one at a time. Please respond to the following questions one at a time and discuss these issues with classmates and your instructor:

2. As noted in the module overview, over 10% of the U.S. population lives in poverty and nearly 1 in 4 children is being raised in poverty. Drawing on this week’s learning materials and citing at least two of the assigned readings, describe what you see as the most significant health disparities linked to poverty? What are the impacts on families living on low incomes?

3. This week’s videos present the effects of trauma and toxic environments on children and their development. We learned that trauma can damage brain development and create distressing physical and psychological conditions. Considering the two videos, what factors/conditions do you believe are essential for healthy child development? How does a family’s income and social class affect their ability to achieve these? Please include a specific example from each video in your response.

4. We have learned about common myths and assumptions faced by many living in or near poverty. Consider one of the assumptions we’ve read about. What impacts can this assumption have on health disparities? What needs to happen in American society and the American healthcare system to reduce poverty overall and to make our system more inclusive? As you discuss, please consider how we can address the disparate rates of poverty among people of various races and ethnicities.
