Writing

Final Paper
For your final paper you will explore a question you pose, read authoritative sources on the question, interpret what you have read, draw a reasoned conclusion and support that conclusion with relevant and correctly documented evidence.
Your paper must be 1,900-2,500 words; the words on your "Works Cited" page are not included in your word count. You must use at least four sources. Only one third of your sources may be pure Internet sources. The topic is of your choice but must be approved by your instructor.
Evaluation:
I will consider the following questions when grading your final draft:
Is the material organized properly for the author's purpose? Is there a clear thesis? Is the thesis arguable and sufficiently narrow in scope? Are the paragraphs well-developed, following an appropriate structure?
Is the essay free of grammatical and mechanical errors? Has the author proofread the work for obvious errors? Is the essay well written with well-constructed and effectively varied sentences? Is the diction appropriate for the audience?
Does the author present all relevant sides of the issue? Is the author's position clearly stated? Does the author have valid reasons for that position? Are the author's claims supported with sufficient evidence?
Are the sources the author has chosen relevant, authoritative and correctly documented? Does the paper follow MLA guidelines for student papers?
