Question #1 (25 pts)

The Freytag's Pyramid lays out the order of a plot:  exposition, inciting incident, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution, and denouement.

Choose a fairytale or fable you know well and write out the order of the plot, using the seven elements given. In your answer also explain why you chose the story you chose and any hindrances you can upon as you worked to flush out the plot of the story.

My example: The Little Mermaid

  • Exposition - Ariel is the youngest daughter of King Titan and wants to be human
  • Inciting Incident - She sees Prince Eric and falls in love, deciding to be human
  • Rising Action - her father forbids her to deal with anything human every again
  • Climax - she exchanges her voice for some human legs, meets Eric, he falls in love with the sea witch, there is a tense battle
  • Falling action - Ariel explains everything to Eric and her dad
  • Denouement - Ariel and Eric get married

Question #2 (25 pts)

There have been many plays and musical which have come to the screen and many which have shifted from the screen to the stage. Some are successful and some are not. Why do you think a play makes a smooth, and sometimes more successful, transition to the screen than from it? What does it have which allows the story to move to the platform of film with ease?

Alternatively, why does a story which did very well on screen struggle as it tries to move to the stage? Think about the writing of plays vs screenplays, the technology a film has which a stage does not and the differences inherent to the medium. What makes a play successful vs a film?

Question #3 (25 pts)

Do a bit of research and find out more about one of the people we have watched a clip about. Think about someone you were interested in as you watched the clip and then dig to find out more about their career in theater. It could be a designer, an actor, a writer, or anyone involved with live theater. It can be someone from the past or living. Tell me a bit more about them and how they are changing, or have changed, live theater as we know it. Pick someone lesser known and brings a new voice to the arts. Why did you pick them? What did you enjoy learning about? What surprised you? Remember to cite your sources and post any links you use in your research.
