IAH 206 Paper Ideas Instructions, The following are some ideas you may use to write your 400-Word argument paper #1. You do not have to use them. You may write on your own idea as long as it has something to do with the readings/lectures from the course. If you are unsure: run it by Mask, Cottone, or Martinez Cruz! Follow the Paper Format and other guidelines found on D2L!! 1. Is there a relation between Prometheus’ punishment, Io’s wanderings, and the human struggle against nature? What is it? Remember: Prometheus is bound to nature (a rock) and so cannot act (any longer) as a liberator. Is this significant? 2. Do the characteristics mentioned by Prometheus at lines 451-517 tell us something about human nature? If so, what is it? Defend a single concept of human nature using these characteristics. 3. Is technology better understood as a burden or as a gift? Develop a thesis answering this, and give an example/examples. 4. Does science eliminate all we hold dear about humanity? Is something in our concept of our own humanity lost with scientific knowledge? 5. Of the seven possible conditions for personhood (Frankenstein lectures), which are most important? Is the monster a person? Why or why not? 6. Do technological solutions to unintended and unforeseen consequences always create more problems? If so, is this part of the very nature of technology? If not, give an example of a technology that did not have attendant unintended consequences and argue that this is sufficient to show that unintended consequences are not part of the nature of technology. (You could use the concept of instrumentalism here). 7. Is it possible to really understand technological systems before they do in fact break or malfunction? If so, give an argument. If not, answer the question: what risks are appropriate to take in developing new technologies? 8. If social, political, and intellectual elements are important for seeing technology as progress, which are the most important and why?
