Project 3: Scatterplots and Regression

Data set:

You will be working with a data set involving different pieces of information about colleges in the United State  - PS1_college_data (1). You will be examining the relationship between 4-year graduation rate and total cost of tuition, if there is any relationship at all. You will identify which is the response and which is the explanatory variable. Here is a link instructing you on how to make a scatterplot in Excel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SKSUOk3PIRY.

Task:

1. Examine the total cost and 4-year graduation rate in the college data spreadsheet on D2L.

2. Make a scatterplot comparing the two variables. This can be made in Excel.

3. Compute the regression equation (instructions on pages 211-213 in the textbook). This can be done using statistical computer programs.

4. Identify the explanatory and response variables.

5. Identify the null and alternative hypotheses.

6. In addition to computing statistics and plotting graph, explain your results in simple language to a lay person without any training in statistical analysis. (Hint: e.g. what is the meaning of response and explanatory variable, what conclusions do you draw from the scatter plot etc. )

Purpose

When analyzing statistics, it is important to be able to identify the response and explanatory variables as well as understand the pattern of their interactions. By graphing the data and finding the regression equation, you are creating a visual of the data. Both will show you how the response and explanatory interact. By identifying the null and alternative hypothesis you are stating the two possible outcomes of the research: there is a relationship between the variables or there is no relationship between the variables.
