A lot of different "specializations" were covered through chapter 16 to 19. As end of semester is coming up (and everything that we've been through this past year), let's focus just on one part of it.
In your opinion, how does stress really affect physical health? What are some anecdotal experiences you have had personally or heard from others how stress impacted their physical health? Please share as much as you feel comfortable. After watching the TED talk about stress with Kelly McGonigal (Links to an external site.), has your opinion changed?
Were you surprised to learn that 75–90% of all visits to health care providers result from stress-related disorders and that those who are stressed are six times more likely to be hospitalized for a physical ailment than those who are not? Has the level of stress you experience ever affected your health, for example, during or after finals week?
In my opinion, stress is one of the main reasons for physical health. I listen to podcast about health and wellness. There are many stories on the podcast that discuss the idea that stress can lead to health problems later in time. I don't remember the story in great detail on the podcast. One guest on the podcast discussed that she was working so much and so long that her physical health deteriorated. Not much time had past until she was diagnosed with a spinal disease. Thankfully, she took up yoga and her body managed her disease. I certainly believe this. I would even go as far to say that stress can influence emotional, spiritual, and mental health. The most interesting about the TED talk was about how we view our stress affects us. My opinion did not change at all. She states that she wants to make people better at stress but I personally do not think that this is possible. I do believe that there is 'good' and 'bad' stress. I work at Pizza Hut and orders often come in waves. When it gets busy, my co-workers and I are often rushing to get them out and read to be delivered or picked up. This is 'good' stress, more specifically, what Ms. Kelly mentions to be heart-racing but not nerve-wracking stress. However, I experience 'bad' stress from time to time. Recently, I had to take my mother to the hospital. Unfortunately, she has faint veins so the hospital has to use her port. In order, to get to her port they have stick in her chest. The hospital stuck my mother in her chest 5 times and she was already in an immense amount of pain. This was stressful to me and it left me worried. This isn't the kind of stress that you can become better at instead it is something you deal with. My mother has been in and out the hospital since I was born and it doesn't get easier or manageable when she tells me that she needs to go to the hospital.
No, I was not surprised at all. I get stressed during finals but I often had things to help balance the stress out. Like, for example, working out or relaxing with my people. Currently, I am extremely stressed and I sense my physical health more. The stress of working two jobs and attending summer school. Then, working as a full-time student and working one job with no break in between the summer and fall semester is taking a toll on me. There is a constant stress in my neck and shoulders from time to time.
