This chapter is in fact fascinating, I like the Folivores or leaf eaters. They have high cusps to slice the leaves. They have thin molar enamels to create sharp teeth. It interests me how the gut is related to the teeth. They all must work together for digestion. Kinda interesting right? The gut in the folivores or leaf eaters is complicated, according to lecture 10 by Dr. Johansen. They have a long, large gut. They must digest cellulose and other plant compounds. Consequently, they have an enlarged large intestine and a large cecum. Remember they eat leaves and its adaptation is in it's teeth and it's gut. Takes longer to digest leaves for these type of eaters. A leaf eater has a larger stomach to allow for the breakdown. Yes they are only eating leaves. To me that is the most interesting part. I would think before this because they were only eating leaves their guts would not be so complex but I was wrong. They are very completed on how the teeth and gut work together. I never knew trying to eat and digest a leaf would be so complex but I find that fascinating in this weeks lesson. The fruit eaters, gum eaters or the Insect eaters don't have such a complicated system as the folivores do. Does that surprise you? It doe me. Have a great week ahead.
