A data set has been made available through eLearning: go to the HAS 945 Moodle page, then to the section Assessment Tasks. There you will find the data in an SPSS data file called surgery.sav. This file contains data for 141 babies who underwent surgery at a pædiatric hospital. The following variables have been included in the data set: Variable Name Variable Description id Identifier gender Gender, values ’M’ or ’F’ place Birthplace, values ’L’, ’R’, or ’O’ birthwt Birth weight, measured in grams gestatio Gestational age, in weeks lengthst Length of stay, in days infect Infection status, values 1 or 2 prematur Prematurity, values 1 or 2 surgery Surgical procedure performed, values 1, 2, or 3 1. (1 mark) Give a sentence stating the aim of the report (hint: what hypothesis/es have you tested below?). 2. (1 mark) State what your dataset contains (for example, you have a collection of variables describing babies who received treatment at a a pædiatric hospital). 3. (2 marks) Open the data set in SPSS. Check that the total number of rows matches what you expected. State in what form the data was provided to you (What file type? How many observations were in the dataset? How many rows of data per baby? How many columns?). 4. (4 marks) In the Variable View window, ensure that the Measure has been set correctly for each variable. Provide a list of variables with the appropriate Measures in your report. 5. (1 mark) State what each following section in the report is/includes, excluding references (so Part 2, 3, and 4)
