IFD Physics II Case Assignment

Calculations Section (30 marks)

1. In a River Raft competition, a team had constructed a raft using 3 empty cylindrical tubs. Each tube is 80 cm in diameter by 120 cm in height and weigh 7 kg. The rower, John, weights 80 kg, rows with an oar of 2 kg. If the remaining construction materials weigh 4 kg, can the raft float on water? (10 marks)

2. Jonathan is interested to evaluate the power output of his bench press and obtained the following readings while performing his bench press:

· The distance between his chest and the resting position of his arm while gripping the weight (barbell) is 16 cm, which is the starting position.

· The distance between his chest and the extended position of his arm while gripping the weight (barbell) is 62 cm, which is the final position.

· The weight (barbell) is 50 kg.

· John took 3.2 seconds to complete the entire action.

Calculate the power of John’s forward push. (10 marks)

3. After the first experiment (Question 1), John took a 1-minute rest and attempted the experiment again with a slightly heavier weight of 52.5 kg and took 3.5 seconds to complete the entire action. If this second experiment resulted in greater power output compared to the preceding experiment (in Question 1), this suggests that John’s muscles are still warming up and should proceed with the third attempt with an even heavier weight than the current attempt. Perform the necessary calculations and determine whether a third attempt is required. (10 marks)

4. Given that you were asked to perform the above experiments (Questions 2 and 3), list 5 safety considerations. (10 marks)

5. John is a soccer player and is interested in determining the power of his kick. Describe a suitable experiment by listing the steps. (10 marks)
