I am most interested in Language and how primates communicate through non-verbal means. In our textbook on age 182, the author talks of nonhuman animals using facial expressions, body postures and vocalizations to get their points across to others. For example, vervet monkeys use a certain type of vocalization to communicate to a predator. I also find it very interesting that when they do communicate they can only do so for today. On page 183 of our text, they say these primates can not remember a predator they saw yesterday or that they may see tomorrow. Humans have the ability to use language in reference to places, objects and events, that our text talks of on page 183. The human brains intellectual ability to do so sets us apart from other primates. On page 184 of our textbook, the author talks of the bonobo Kanzi, that uses lexigrams to communicate with humans. This chimp was taught to use symbols, where as humans use language to communicate. Humans, at a young age, are exposed to language through parents, television and social media. According to the author of our textbook, Kanzi at 2 1/2 years old using symbols that he acquired before the "toolmaking days". Language is powerful whether we use non-verbal or verbal means to convey what one needs. Through our professors lecture, textbook and U-tube videos there are endless means to educate ourselves on language and how to communicate non-verbally. The power of it is astonishing and one of the reasons why communications is my major.
