Jenna, a good friend of yours who studies at the same university, has been complaining for some time to you that she never has any money. Eventually, she is offered a job as a bartender in the student bar at your university. You are pleased - not only because Jenna will have money, but you will see her often because you are a regular customer at this bar.
Jenna enjoys the extra income that the job brings. She also seems to enjoy the work. You are also pleased because you notice that whenever you go up to the bar, Jenna always serves you first regardless of how many people are waiting.
After a short while, it becomes apparent that Jenna is not enjoying the job quite as much as she did. She always seems to have a new story about how the bar manager has mistreated her (she gets the worst shifts, gets the worst duties (cleaning washroom) and she gets reprimanded for minor mistakes that seem to go uncensored for others).
One day, when you go up to pay for a round of 4 drinks, she discretely only charges you for one drink. While you are uncomfortable with this, you are happy to save some money and you don't want to get in trouble for refusing.
This goes on for a number of visits. You are happy to save money but you are not totally comfortable with what is going on. When you talk to Jenna, she laughs it off and says: "Yeah, it is great isn't it? They will never notice and you get a cheap night out. Besides, it is only what this place deserves after the way I've been treated.
1.Who is wrong: Jenna? You? The Bar Manager?
2.Is being undercharged the same as other preferential treatment: such as Jenna serving you ahead of other customers?
3.Does the fact that Jenna feels she's been mistreated by her boss condone her behaviour? Does it help to explain her actions or your actions?
