You have been selected as a Laboratory Management Apprentice. Your assignment is to create a small clinical laboratory to service the university student community (lab size: 20 ft x 20 ft). The lab will be open 40 hours per week (M-F 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM). Along with yourself, you have been authorized to hire 1 full time employee or 2 part time employees. You have no laboratory equipment except for a brand new clinical-grade microscope and a computer system. Your budget, although not disclosed to you, is limited. You need to be able to draw the necessary blood work on-site and perform CBCs, BMPs, urinalysis, urine pregnancy tests, rapid streps, and heterophile tests. Additional laboratory services may be added over time and as profits allow. To set up this lab, you must create a budget, choose instrumentation, hire employees, create policies, and maintain the lab's daily activities. Lectures and assignments will aid you in creating your clinical lab so that you will be promoted from the Laboratory Manager Apprentice to the Laboratory Manager. For each assignment, thoroughly address the questions using your lecture notes, required readings, available references and people-resources. All assignments should be typed and professionally organized in a 3-ring binder with division tabs for each module (may be included in the same binder as the Portfolio). No added points are given for expensive binders, paper, or pretty colors, so spending time and effort in the content is more important. Be neat and submit a clean-looking, complete project with quality content.
