Building an Access Database to Manage Member Data

GETTING STARTED

• Open the file SC_AC365_2021_EOM1-1_FirstLastName_1.accdb, available for download.
• Save the file SC_AC365_2021_EOM1-1_FirstLastName_1.accdb as SC_AC365_2021_EOM1-1_FirstLastName_2.accdb
  • Edit the file name by changing “1” to “2”.
  • If you do not see the .accdb file extension, do not type it. The file extension will be added for you automatically.
• With the file SC_AC365_2021_EOM1-1_FirstLastName_2.accdb open, ensure that your first and last name is displayed as the first record in the _GradingInfoTable table.
  • If the table does not display your name, delete the file and download a new copy.

 

PROJECT STEPS

1. Competitive Swim Clubs, Inc. is a national chain of swim clubs targeted to youth and adults who are or who want to be competitive swimmers. You are the regional manager for clubs located in the southeastern United States. You are developing an Access database application to help manage and analyze member and club data.
   
   Open the Clubs table in Datasheet View and use Street to rename the current Address field. Close the Clubs table.
2. Create a new table in Datasheet View. Change the ID field name to CoachID with the AutoNumber data type, add a field named CoachFirstName with the Short Text data type, add a field named CoachLastName with the Short Text data type, and add a field named ClubID with the Number data type. (Hint: The CoachID field will be automatically set as the primary key.) Save the table with the name Coaches and close it.
3. Open the SwimFees table in Datasheet View and add the new record shown in Table 1. Close the SwimFees table.

4. Open the Clubs table in Datasheet View and delete the record for ClubID C05 (Athens Water Athletics). Modify the ClubName value for the record with ClubID C02 (Hillview Swim Group), using Upstate Swim Group as the new ClubName value, and then close the Clubs table.
5. Create a new query using the Simple Query Wizard. Choose the MemberID, FirstName, Lastname, State, and ClubID fields from the Members table. Title the new query using SCMembers as the name, open the query to view information, a portion of which is shown in Figure 1, and then close it.

 

6. In the Navigation pane, rename the Members form using MemberEntry as the new form name.
7. Create a new form based on the Swimmers table using the Form tool. Title the form SwimmerInfo and confirm that it matches Figure 2, and then save and close it.

 

8. Create a new report using the Report Wizard. Choose the SwimmerID, FirstName, LastName, and LevelID fields from the Swimmers table. Do not add any grouping levels. Sort the records in ascending order by LevelID. Use a Tabular layout and a Portrait orientation. Title the report using SwimmerByLevel as the name, preview the report, a portion of which is shown in Figure 3, and then close it.

 

Save and close any open objects in your database. Compact and repair your database, close it, and then exit Access. Follow the directions on the website to submit your completed project.
