Part I – Theories and approaches For this section, choose one of the following three questions and answer in essay format. Please quote the syllabus there it is relevant. 1) Most of the "traditional" schools of international relations theory, such as realism and liberalism, assume that the international system is an anarchy. But what does this concept mean within the IR discipline? Discuss the extent to which the idea of anarchy is important for current studies of international relations. 2) "Critical theory in IR is good at contesting existing notions, (such as the state, sovereignty and conflict), but must do more to bring forward alternative ideas." Please argue for or against this statement, choosing one key area of critical theory, such as developing regions, postcolonialism, gender, the environment, and postmodernism. 3) It has been repeatedly claimed by various schools of realism that both international law and international organizations are dominated by great power politics. In your view, where does this claim come from, and how valid is it within IR today? Give examples of international organizations or laws that you think are important to illustrate this the point. Part II – Empirical study This part must be written in a suitable essay format, with the syllabus cited where appropriate. Please select an article (not a textbook chapter!) from the syllabus list. First explain the article's content, focusing on the arguments. Then discuss the content of the selected article in relation to other relevant parts of the curriculum literature. If you taught the subject of international politics, would you keep this article as a syllabus? Explain why! Important information: Please only use or do research on the attached resources.
