Assignment #2 – Media Comparison (50 pts) Again you will find two articles for this assignment. The topic is up to you but must be related to Sociology. However, for this assignment one article should be from a mainstream source [HuffPost, Rolling Stone, The New Yorker, Reason, Essence, The Atlantic, etc.…]. You will then find a peer-reviewed, academic, sociological article on the same subject. If you aren’t registered to any online database, Google will still be able to provide you with enough search results for this assignment. The point of your paper will be to compare and contrast the two articles. Some examples of what you could compare include but are not limited to the focus of the article, despite being on the same topic they may approach them from different perspectives or highlight different causes/consequences. Whether or not they use data, if the data is appropriate, do use some sort of study to back their findings, was the study done valid in terms of the subjects they used [for example a study on domestic abuse that only researches one race would not necessarily be a valid study unless it was specifically written about that segment of the population], do they draw different conclusions, are there any things lacking [in your opinion] or areas that could be improved upon to paint a more comprehensive picture of the social issue you are studying. Provide a brief abstract of each article Find 2-3 similarities between the two articles AND 2-3 differences. Critique each article on areas that could be improved. Perhaps the research presented was not comprehensive, or it only researched women, or there were only 25 participants, etc... Maybe there was no data presented or the data was from research done 20 years ago. Highlight 1-2 areas that you thought were pertinent and presented well and explain why. This paper should be 3-4 pages, not including your Title and Reference pages, which are required. Please be sure to cite your sources in your paper and include a full reference page.
