The readings and materials in Learning Unit Five are fundamental to our contemporary understanding of the world. The question of "authorship" and of a deity's ability to control our moral compass are closely related (Think: If "I am whatever you say I am," then how can I claim that "I am what I am?") However, even though we can place these ideas within our contemporary setting, they still call on themes and ideas from all of history. Ancient Greece, the Renaissance, and the Enlightenment all had to come before Nietzsche and Barthes because the ideas build on each other.
