Arts

For our first project this quarter, some students created designs for art exhibitions
about American art in 18th and 19th centuries by artists of color. This option for the Project 2 asks
you to again imagine yourself as a curator in an art museum. Once again, your job is to create an
art exhibition teaching the general public about art made by people of African, Native American,
Asian-American and/or Latinx/Chicanx heritage. However, now your focus is upon recent art of
the 20th and 21st centuries. Please use Chapter 4 (Parts 1 and 2) and Chapter 5 to guide you in the
process of selecting artworks for your exhibition. Make sure to include examples from at least
THREE racial or ethnic groups.

• Design 3 rooms for your museum exhibit. Each room needs to have at least TWO
examples of art or replicas of architecture from Chapter 4 (either part 1 and/or 2) and
TWO examples from Chapter 5 of the class textbook (FOUR artworks total per room).
You may add additional related examples you find via online research. Be creative! Try
to consider various ways of displaying the art that might enhance your audience's
appreciation.
• Consider the timeframe: Art from early and late 20th century, then recent 21st
century. What common themes or ongoing issues involving racism, discrimination,
social justice and activism, and/or struggles for equity and empowerment do you see
evident in your chosen artworks? For example, how might a painting from the Harlem
Renaissance be compared with the more recent art and activism of the Civil Rights Era
and/or Black Lives Matter Movement?

• Write exhibition labels to introduce your exhibit. Start with a basic introduction - What
information about multicultural arts and 20th-21st century American history would you
include? There is a lot of information in the textbook and not all of it can be listed in a
label! Think about core ideas you want to present. Include a paragraph for each art object
or display that will serve as a museum label. ****Try to make thematic connections
between the art in creative ways.
