Question 1)Make an Ethnography themes using a family of catholics. As an example, In which you are part of. While anthropological field work observes the usual routines of ordinary life, it also takes into account unusual activities.  Field work explores the daily, weekly, monthly and yearly cycles of a culture. For example, Bohannan's article on the Tiv and Lee's piece on the !Kung demonstrates how a routine activity or belief in one culture can teach us about that culture and, by contrast,  our own. Define the borders of the culture you are exploring. These borders may not be easily identifiable but, even if this is the case, you can learn much for why they are not. You will look at the material culture (sights, sounds, smells, buildings, language, etc.) and non-material culture (beliefs, symbols, values, language usage, etc.). Both aspects of culture you will find are constantly changing and the boundaries between the two are fluid. Internal differences within the culture you select should emerge as a part of this field work. 

 

 

This is an example of Ethnography themes: In this case only use a catholic family. 

 

More on what to do. Let's say I am doing an ethnography on this class. My themes might include: 

 

  • Variety of people in the room maybe by gender, ethnicity, year and major. Many of you are taking class for the distribution requirements, some for you are majors/minors and, get this, a few because they actually like me but not as much as my dog does.
  • Days and times of observations. Less important here than for your fieldwork but things such as lower attendance on Mondays are interesting.
  • What are the formal and informal rules in class? Policies and how they are or are not enforced, phones, etc. are permitted and why or why not. If so are they a distraction or not.
  • Usual and unusual events and how they are handled.
  • Multiple Methods of evaluation.
  • Atmosphere. Rigid, relaxed, inconsistent.
  • Compare and contrast to other classes.
