Create a Creature Written Report and Pixton Project

GUIDELINES FOR CREATURE

The idea must be for a unique creature. It cannot be a mythological or existing storybook creature

(unicorn, mermaid, hippogriff). Do not simply combine organisms. The adaptations must make logical sense and be evolutionarily possible (no fire-breathing dragons). Provide background research on the organism's habitat and Its ancestor's characteristics. Consult a reference to help determine a proper Latin name for the organism.

Use course textbooks, books in the library, and the internet for inspiration.

1. Format: Typed and double-spaced in 12-point font with margins of 1 inch on all sides.

2. Title Page: Include your name, the title of your report ("Create a Creature"), the name you came up with for your creature, and the date the report is submitted.

3. Introduction: Introduce your organism's design and explain how you created It. Give its scientific and common name. Explain how you named your organism. You should give the ohylum, species, order that your creature belongs to, along with other classification categories if possible.

GUIDELINES FOR REPORT:

Format: Typed and double-spaced in 12-point font with margins of 1 inch on all sides.

Title Page- Include your name, the title of your report ("Create a Creature"), the name you came up with for your creature, and the date the report is

submitted.

1. Introduction: Introduce your organism and how you found it. Give its scientific and common names and explain how you named your organism. If possible, you should give the phylum that your creature belongs to, along with other classification categories. You can invent your own genus and species name since It is a new organism, but you must explain how you came up with those names.

e For example, if your organism ts frog-like, an encyclopedia will tell you that the genus of frogs is Rana. You may want to name the species after yourself — Rana roberti
2. Habitat: A complete description of the environment in which your organism lives: aquatic, terrestrial, mountainous, tundra, grassland, forest, jungle, etc. You should include temperatures, amount of rainfall, sunlight, vegetation, etc.

3. Behavior: Describe your organism's behavior. Is it active in the day (diurnal) or at night (nocturnal)? Is ita social organism or does it live alone? Describe its shelter. Does it have a nest in trees, burrow underground, or live ina cave? How does it communicate with other organisms?

4. Diet: Is your organism an herbivore, omnivore, or carnivore? Give a detailed description of what specific foods it eats. How many times a day does it eat? How much does It eat? How does it get its food? How often does it need water?

5. Adaptations: You must fully describe 4 physical adaptations of your organism. For each adaptation, describe what it looks like and how it helps the organism to survive. Consider the following:

e Food source. Is your organism a predator or prey? Does it have to compete with others of the same species?

e How does your organism fit into its habitat?

How does it interact with other species?

e How does your organism get a mate? How many offspring does it have? Does It care for

its babies?
6. Genetics: Pick ONE of the adaptations you

described. Search the National Library of Medicine

for the gene scientifically responsible for the

adaptation. Explain the genetics for this traits,

location, chromosome number, and gene

sequence. What are the possible genotypes and

phenotypes for your organism? e.g., heterozygous

LI for prominent ears. What traits did it receive from

its parents?

7. Evolution: Based on your observations about

habitat, behavior, diet, and adaptations, what

present-day creature is your organism most closely

related to? Explain how your creature evolved from

this ancestor through natural selection. What

selective pressures forced your organism to evolve

and how long did it take? Consider the possibility of

transitional forms and vestigial structures. If they

exist, describe them.

8. Summary and conclusion: Briefly summarize

your findings. Use summary to create Pixton Comic.

References: You must also include at least 5

references. They should be included at the end of

your report under the heading "References" and

listed in alphabetical order. See the next page for

examples on format.
