Everyone faces challenges and I am no different, but I chose to embrace the challenge and learn from them, which will make me an excellent candidate for Speech-language pathology at the University of Central Florida

Everyone faces challenges and I am no different, but I chose to embrace the challenge and learn from them, which will make me an excellent candidate for Speech-language pathology at the University of Central Florida. One challenge I have faced is having hearing loss and people doubted I wouldn't make it to college. Those words motivated me and allowed me to lead into college.  I want to give people the positive attitude they need to further themselves in life. I was unaware of this field until I was allowed to volunteer at a nursing home and met with a Speech-language pathologist. From looking over what she has done for example fluency and swallowing stages. As I observed the way she cared for her patients and the way the patient was happy seeing her. I knew what I wanted my career to be. From there I researched, there are only 4.2% of Speech Language pathologists are African American.  I always had a passion and empathy for helping people find their voice no matter if it is verbal, nonverbal, or otherwise.

I will earn my bachelor's in Speech Hearing Science Disorders at the University of South Florida Spring of 2023. On my project called diversity issues affecting Tampa Bay, I was allowed to focus on establishing a support group for African American stutters

I will honor the ASHA code of ethics by treating each patient the same and respecting cultural differences and I will learn about patient culture to make them feel comfortable talking about treatments.

Between juggling Broward College and working full-time at Old Navy. (ASL) I have volunteered at the National Stuttering Association ( name) to get a better background of a Speech Language Pathologist's daily routine. (shadowing) From there, I have seen children entering her office cheerful. There's one student who stutters when he is telling a story and when he gets excited, he starts to stutter. The Speech Language pathologist taught him to take a deep breath and start over. When the words get tough say the word "easy".( why I put the easy)

My goals as a Speech Language Pathologist are to allow patients to advocate for their wants and needs. Another goal is for patients can continue with their daily lives. My transition to the University of South Florida while Covid -19 was ongoing, reduced my ability to see out more volunteer opportunities. When the opportunity rose, I was allowed to volunteer at Gigi Playhouse, a non-charitable organization for children with Down Syndrome I got the opportunity to tutor a child in developing language skills by assisting them in sentence building and letter pronunciation, as well as teaching American Sign Language to children who are nonverbal. My long-term educational goal is to earn a Master's in Speech Language Pathologist and work in a pediatric field specializing in Aural Rehabilitation. The reason I chose Aural Rehabilitation is that it involves counseling the parent and involving family members in the appointment session. I would be there every step of the way. I believe once a family member is involved the a better chance for the child to have a successful appointment. My experience has given me the skills needed to be a successful graduate student. As a future Speech-language Pathologist, my goal is to give every client a chance to get their voice again and the best treatment. I know attending the University of Central Florida is an excellent fit for me to achieve my professional, and academic goals, and continue to grow my leadership skills because of their great, close-to-home, higher acceptance rate and acceptance of everyone no matter the race.
