1) What did you find most interesting about the reading on C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien?  Please expound.

 

2. How effective are the arts in arguing for moral objectivity? Please reflect upon (share your personal reaction to) one of the following:

3. Please reflect briefly on the module as a whole. The following questions can guide you:  What is your overall reaction?  Can anything, in fact, be called evil--rape; torturing babies for fun; slavery or genocide of a minority for the utility of the majority; etc.?  Explain. If there is no evil, and if our social contract is ever removed by a stronger power, why ought anyone accept and respect our "right" to life, liberty, and a pursuit of happiness? (If they are clearly the stronger power, then appealing to the ideal of treating you how they would want to be treated will be a very weak and empty argument). Is evil/injustice a problem? If not, explain. If so, is the reality of evil--the fact that we recognize real cases of wrongness and injustice--a strong case for moral objectivity--that there is a universal, objective moral order to which we are all accountable?

 

4. After reading through the literature, what is your view on the problem of an eschatological justice?  Is a final punishment required by an ultimate sense of justice? If not, why not?  If so, which view of hell do you think makes the most sense?
