A ten-year-old girl, a rape victim, has had to travel from her Ohio hometown to Indiana to find a doctor to perform an abortion on her. The girl was treated in Indianapolis because where she lives in Ohio is illegal due to the "fetal heartbeat" law that went into effect with the Supreme Court decision. Such laws prohibit abortions from the time heart activity can be detected in an embryo, which is usually around the sixth week of pregnancy. Gerson Fuentes, twenty-seven years old, was the man who abused the girl and confessed to having abused the girl at least twice. Fuentes is being held on a $2m bond and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on 22 July 2022. The incident gained attention this month when the Indianapolis Star newspaper reported she had to travel to Indiana to secure an abortion because she was three days past Ohio's six-week limit, which does not include exceptions for rape or incest. The girl was an example of how new abortion restrictions were already harming the most vulnerable people.
