ENGL Paper # 1: Definition of a Problem ----)3-4 pages. Papers are double spaced, in 12-point type. Times New Roman is a good font. Define a problem for a specific audience. You might, for example, define a problem at the place where you work, where you believe the problem deserves the attention of a certain audience. This audience might be a superior or a group of co-workers. In such a case you would write a memo to make your audience aware of the problem. On the other hand, you may wish to focus on a problem specific to your field of study, or the place where you live, or another problem you are experiencing. The point of this exercise is to define the outlines of a problem, gather the evidence to prove the problem is real, and persuade a specific audience that the problem is worth their attention. I’m asking you to draw on your experience and choose the topic (problem) you will write about. This means you are the expert on also identifying the audience. As research and write your paper, you will have to consider these issues: First, evaluate how well you really understand the problem. Second, you will also have to use the NEEDS, KNOWLEDGE, ATTITUDE audience formula. To what extent will you have to persuade your audience that a problem exists? What are the attitudes of your audience toward the issue? To what extent will you have to adjust your writing style to accommodate your audience. Sources: You will need to do research to find your evidence. Anyone can voice an opinion, but that opinion means little without real evidence to back it up. To write this paper you will need at least two primary sources and two secondary sources. Do not define the solution—yet! At this point, I am not asking you to develop the solution to the problem. We will address that in a later paper. Whatever your audience, memo writing requires tightness and clarity. POSSIBLE EXAMPLES: 1. Your team is not working well together on a particular project. The purpose of your Problem Definition Memo would be to expose the problem and evaluate its causes. The audience would be the other team members. 2. You have discovered a flaw in the project you are working on. This could be an equipment failure or a communication breakdown, a safety issue, or any number of things. You must bring the flaw to the attention of your superiors, evaluate its causes, and prove to them that the flaw is worth their concern. 3. The campus club you belong to is falling apart. Members are leaving and it’s difficult to recruit new members. Maybe it’s the Robotics Club, or the French Club, or the Judo Club. You want to save the club, but first you must prove to your fellow remaining club members that the club is failing. You must show them why it’s failing.
