Description of Assessment 2: Report
Using the tools and techniques explored during the delivery of this module you are to write a report which explores the operations of an organisation of your choice. You should select a small business that it is familiar to you, for example that you have visited, experienced (ideally as a customer or as a worker) and observed recently.
In your analysis of the operation, you should address the following:
1 - How the operations strategy of this organisation is positioned in the Hayes and Wheelwright model, including a justified indication of the model stage in which you would place your chosen organisation.
2 - A thorough analysis of one or more operations or quality related areas that you judge as important to the effective running of the operation. You can choose among the topics, concepts, tools and techniques covered in the module from week 5 until week 11.
3 - A concise summary of your observations, which could include key recommendations (where you are examining problems with the operation and are in a position to suggest improvements).
Please note that early selection of the business to analyse is strongly encouraged. This will help planning the data collection process. The module convenor can provide advice and suggestions for selecting the organisation.
3
Guidelines:
- The report structure should contain the following elements:
o A - Introduction, which should reflect the competitive positioning of the organisation and the relation between the business strategy and the operations strategy (addressing point 1 above).
o B – Analysis of the organisation’s operation using appropriate tools and techniques from this module (addressing point 2 above). This can be organised in subsections as needed.
o C - Summary of your key observations/recommendations (addressing point 3 above).
- Data collection sources from the organisation of your choice can be both primary (e.g. interviews, surveys, direct observations) and secondary (e.g. news, company website, databases) sources of information. Primary data collection is not a requirement to obtain a high mark in the report, but will be appreciated whenever available.
- When primary sources of data are used, please use the module information letter (available on Canvas) to contact participants and keep in mind the following principles:
o surveys and questionnaires should be completed anonymously by participants,
o names of interviewees should not be used, instead use a pseudonym or number so individuals cannot be identified,
o any personal information collected should be treated in strict confidence and not disclosed to third parties.
- Critically engage with relevant academic literature and theories, augmented with your own thoughts and arguments.
- References cited must be included in a references list at the end of the report. Suggested referencing style is Harvard.
- Word count: 2000 words (+/- 10%, excluding references).
- Appendices can be used if needed and they are excluded from the word count.
Assessment criteria:
- Knowledge and understanding (25%)
- Application (25%)
- Reading and research (20%)
- Critical thinking (20%)
- Presentation and style (10%)
Description of the assessment criteria can be found in the University of Sussex Business School rubric and it is posted on the Assessment Information page (Marking Scheme section) of this module’s Canvas site.
